Gary R. Chapman is president of Gary R. Chapman Consulting LLC. He retired from his position as chairman, president and CEO of LIN TV Corp in July of 2006, where he had worked since 1988 when he joined LIN’s former parent company as president of Television. While there, Gary was named CEO of Television in 1994 and chairman in 2000.

He began his television career at KSDK-TV (St. Louis) in 1967 and became the director of Marketing and Research for the station’s owner, Pulitzer Television, in 1976. From there Gary moved to WLNE-TV (Providence) where he served as general manager and then onto Freedom Newspapers, Inc., where he was director of broadcasting before being named senior vice president.

Gary’s involvement in the industry is extensive and began in 1980 when he became a member of the Electronic Media Rating Council, where he was chairman from 1982 to 1988. He was joint board chairman of NAB from 1991 to 1993 and served on the board of directors since 1987, including as the president of Television. Gary has served on the board of directors for the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), the Advanced Television Test Center, Inc. (ATTC) and the Advertising Council and was chairman for the Association for Maximum Service Television (MSTV). Gary is also a former director of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.

Presently, Gary is immediate past chairman of the board of governors for the NAB Education Foundation and is on the board of the Library of American Broadcasting and Broadcast Foundation of America. He also co-chaired the NAB Decency in Programming Task Force and is a board trustee at Roger Williams University.

Gary received his Bachelor of Science degree in radio and television communication from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and honorary doctoral degree from Roger Williams University. He is the recipient of the 2002 Hugh Malcolm Beville Jr. Award for his achievement in the field of audience research. Gary was also elected a Broadcast Pioneer in 2007.
