Award Categories and Entry Procedures
2013 Celebration of Service to America Awards
Deadline for Entries – March 5, 2013
Stations, as well as Groups, may submit multiple entries for Service to America Community Awards.
Stations may only submit one entry each in the Service to Children and Service to Television Award categories. Groups are not eligible for awards in these categories.
Answer ALL FOUR questions for each individual entry. Judges will deduct points for incomplete entries.
Video and audio submissions must be no longer than five minutes for each individual entry.

Service to Children Awards for Radio and Television
These awards spotlight television and radio stations for their overall excellence in serving the children of their communities. Entries should reflect all efforts by the station to provide educational and informational programs, campaigns and PSAs for children age 16 or younger. (Programs and campaigns about children, but not directed to children, may be considered in other categories.) Stations should submit only one entry in this category, which should include all relevant programs, public service campaigns and PSAs.
- Briefly describe the purpose and goals of your station’s efforts toward children age 16 or younger.
- Provide a brief description of all relevant programming, PSAs or campaigns produced and aired by your station during the eligibility period. For programs, please include the air day, date and time.
- Provide the age of the target audience for each program, PSA or campaign (e.g., 2-8, 9-11, 12-16).
- Please cite, and include if possible, evidence of station outreach efforts and viewer and community reaction to the programming, PSAs or campaigns (e.g., printed material, photographs, ratings, letters, awards, etc.).
Service to America Community Awards for Radio and Television
This category honors radio and television broadcasters for individual campaigns, projects or programs that serve the public good or otherwise provide exemplary service to their local communities. The campaigns, projects or programs may respond to an emergency or specific need in the community and/or they may include partners such as nonprofits, commercial enterprises, government agencies or some combination thereof. Individual stations or broadcast group owners may submit multiple entries in this category.
- Briefly describe the campaign, project or program and the local community need to which it responded.
- If the campaign, project or program is a partnership, briefly describe the nature of the partnership, how long the relationship has been in existence, how it has evolved and what it has accomplished.
- IF POSSIBLE, approximate the following: amount of airtime devoted to the campaign, project or program; dollar value of that airtime; funds raised or dollar value of goods collected; any other quantifiable results, such as number of volunteers recruited, pints of blood collected, station staff involved, etc.
- Please cite, and include if possible, evidence of station outreach efforts and viewer and community reaction to the programming, PSAs or campaigns (e.g., printed material, photographs, ratings, letters, awards, etc.).
Service to America Television Award
This award recognizes a television station for the totality of its efforts, during the eligibility period, in serving its community. Entrants are judged on their overall commitment to excellence as evidenced by the extent and consistency of their overall, ongoing community service initiatives. Stations should submit only one entry in this category.
- Briefly describe the purposes and goals of your station’s overall outreach efforts in the community.
- List and describe the station’s most significant public service campaigns and activities during the eligibility period. Include the names of organizations that benefited from these initiatives.
- Describe the station’s consistent local programming and coverage (e.g., regular community affairs programming, PSAs, special community awareness campaigns/series, news coverage, coverage of community events, etc.).
- Please cite, and include if possible, evidence of station outreach efforts and viewer and community reaction to the programming, PSAs or campaigns (e.g., printed material, photographs, ratings, letters, awards, etc.).
NAB Crystal Radio Awards
The winners of the 2013 NAB Crystal Radio Awards will be recognized during the Celebration of Service to America Awards ceremony. The NAB Crystal Radio Awards honor radio stations for their year-round commitment to community service. This is a separate awards program administered by the NAB Radio Department.
