Freedom of Speech PSA Contest

Each year, the NAB Education Foundation challenges America’s communications students from colleges and universities from around the country to create public service announcements (PSA) for radio and television that highlight the importance of free speech. This national competition is presented in partnership with the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) and sponsored by the McCormick Foundation. Winning entries are distributed to radio and television stations to air during National Freedom of Speech Week, designated as the third week of October.

Create a 30 second Public Service Announcement on freedom of speech for radio and/or television and win up to $3,000 in scholarship money.

Who can participate in this contest?

The competition is open to all part time or full time graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in a college, university or community/technical college who maintain significant control over the content and aesthetics of the PSA (producing, directing, writing, editing, etc.).

What are the scholarship prizes?

Six prizes will be awarded as follows:

Radio 1st Place$3,000Television 1st Place$3,000
Radio 2nd Place$2,000Television 2nd Place$2,000
Radio 3rd Place$1,000Television 3rd Place$1,000

Will the winning PSA spots be aired?

Winning entries will be made available to radio and television stations for airing at their discretion in conjunction with National Freedom of Speech Week, designated the third week of October.

What is the deadline for entering the contest?

Entries are due by April 30, 2010.

When will the winners be announced?

Winners will be announced in July 2010.
